In the old days of the Internet (1995) people said thephrase "build it and they will come" This has changed however.. with more and more sites onthe net you have to do something that will attractpeople. I have found some things that have worked.Look at all the largest sites on the Internet. Yahoo,Altavista, Lycos, and Jayde you will see somethingvery similar with them. There is hardly any advancedgraphics or Javascripts on these sites. It is verystraight forward with simple text based menu withsimple compressed graphics. I will use Yahoo as a example. It is the Largest siteon the Internet in terms of traffic. The site layoutis VERY straightforward with no moving graphics orJavascript. This is something that people should notewhen designing a site. GRAPHICS TAKE TIME TODOWNLOAD!When I visit a graphic intensive site I might take thetime to wait until the download is complete if thegraphics are really cool... but trust me.. the secondtime I go to the site (if there would be a secondtime) I will hit that stop button faster than you cansay "long download" Design your site as if it is a portal or searchengine. Portals have dealt with huge volumes oftraffic and have done their research. Its the cheapway to do market research.... my college professoronce told me that if I were to open a store.. choose alocation right next to a new McDonalds. In order forthe McDonalds to be built a invest a serious amountof money for market research is spent.. how muchtraffic does the street get.. how close is it tobusinesses (the people on their lunch break have verylittle time for lunch and have a tendency to eat fastfood) Trust me when I say that Yahoo or Altavista does theirresearch. Their livelihood depends on how theirvisitor reacts to their site. They measure clickthrough from the main site to other areas.. they evenmeasure the spacing and the fonts to make sure itappeals to their massive audience as well as designtheir site for the least amount of bandwidth traffic.They dont want to slow down their site. So theirsite is VERY efficient.
