In Praise of Raw Code
The first program I ever used for web layout was Adobe PageMaker, and it was hellish. I was trying to learn how to use PhotoShop atthe same time, and it seemed like neither of them would do whatthey were supposed to do-Id scan something, and it would show upseven or eight times larger than Id expected; or Idaccidentally turn something green or black, or cut off a hugechunk of my picture, or all of my text would be smashed upagainst the top of the page. I dont remember being thatfrustrated since learning how to talk for the first time.Six or seven months later, the internet company I worked for sentall of the editors to a introductory HTML class at Salt LakeCommunity College. Like a lot of people, I was intimidated byHTML, which is why I started out with a WYSIWYG editor. Coding isdefinitely more time-consuming, but its easier (because itslogical) and is much more precise. I remember wishing that Idlearned how to code before Id started blindly messing aroundwith PageMaker, not only because PageMaker had nearly given me astress ulcer, but Id wasted so much time feeling around in thedark and feeling like an idiot. I had no idea this whole thingwas really so easy. Not that Im patient enough to code from scratch; no way. I useDreamweaver. The problem with Dreamweaver, of course (and lots ofother WYSIWYG programs) is they have their quirks. Anyone whoplans on maintaining a professional web page should getthemselves over to the library, or to their local communitycollege and take an HTML class (there are also some goodtutorials on the web, though theyre probably less effective thanan actual human being who can help you as soon as you run intotrouble). With some sharp HTML skills, youll not only be able totroubleshoot your own web page problems, but youll have absolutecontrol over your pages; youll be able to create the page yousee in your head, instead of resigning yourself to the page youhappen to end up with after messing around on your computer forhours and hours.Dreamweaver and HomeSite together make a powerful web-buildingtoolbox (you can download a 30-day trial version of HomeSite atwww.allaire.com). Dreamweaver is a pretty easy program to use toget your basic elements in place, but HomeSite allows you tofine-tune your code, do a global "search and replace" to edityour pages for consistency, as well as spell-check your text.Anyone can put a page up on the web; if youre a master of HTML,youll be able to take full control of the look, feel andfunctionality of your pages.
