Link popularity has recently become an important aspect toconsider when promoting a website. Many search engines havestarted to use link popularity to help determine ranking intheir listings. Gaining links from other sites is also verybeneficial because you gain added traffic when users followthe link from another site to your site.What Is Link Popularity? Link popularity is basically the number and quality of linksthat point towards your site. A link from a very importantsite is worth more than a link from a smaller site. Thesearch engine companies think that an important site wouldonly link to your site if your site was important, and itmakes sense too. Try getting the main page of Yahoo! tolink to you and youll fail, but if you did get a link, thenyour site must be worth something. You couldnt even get alink to your site from a medium size site unless your sitewas important enough and had something to offer. Both ofwhich are important aspects in determining relevancy - asearch engines main goal.The number of links is also important for the same reason.Your site must be important if many sites link to you.Search engines know these things, and that is the basis forlink popularity.Linking Strategy RulesThe most basic way of gather and exchanging links is tosimply visit websites and email the webmaster asking for alink exchange. However, there are a few rules to keep inmind.1. Related, Not Competitive - You should try to focus yourlinking strategy on sites related to yours, but not indirect competition. For example, a search engine submissioncompany site wouldnt want to link with a competitor. Theywould be better off linking with a website that teachesvarious ways of promotion. The object is not to losebusiness to competitors, but to gain business from similarsites.2. Offer A Link - Most sites wont just give out a link fornothing in return. Have a link to their site setup and thenemail them asking for an exchange. Even go as far as togive them the URL of where their link is located. Thisbasically just makes the offer more serious because youalready have a link setup.3. Be Selective - You shouldnt just fire off an email toevery website you find asking for a link exchange. Beselective based on the importance of your site. If youhave a large site that has been around a while, you can bemore selective with your linking. You just want to be surethat you arent wasting your time with sites that willbenefit greatly from your link, but wont do much for youat all.4. Mini Yahoo! - When I created my links page, I had in mymind a picture of a small directory. Yahoo uses actualpeople to decide where and if a site gets added. Althoughmy link page is obviously much smaller than Yahoo, I try tokeep the same idea. I set up a page with differentcategories that relate to my site. This makes your linkspage professional and also offers another free service formy visitors to use.
